Genesis 3:1-7 | Paradise Lost: The Lie
The word fall has a widely understood meaning in our culture. We talk about someone's fall from grace or fall from stardom, and we all instinctively know we are talking about something that started off good turning bad. The word fall carries with it the idea of humiliation or demotion. A fall often leads to brokenness. In Genesis 3, the fall of Adam and Eve into sin results in the brokenness of creation; it shatters their ability to reflect the image of God clearly as they were designed to do. The serpent's temptation and its sad results set the stage for the ongoing clash between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light that unfolds throughout Scripture. In Genesis 3 the Biblical narrative shifts from creation to corruption, from integrity to insurrection, from rule to rebellion. Genesis 3 describes "the curse" that has come not just upon human beings but also upon the entire creation. As sad as it is, understanding the first sin is crucial to understanding our origin story.
