Romans 14:13-23 | The Essence of Christian Love

In Romans 14:13-23, Paul now highlights a crucial point concerning the whole matter of Christian freedom which could be summed up in the words of Martin Luther when he said, “A Christian man is a most free lord of all, subject to none. [And] a Christian man is a most dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” Luther's point is that when it comes to our consciences in connection to Christian freedom, Jesus Christ is the only Lord and judge over them so that no one else can justly bind them (as Paul taught in the previous words) to things outside of Scripture. Our freedom in Christ should never become an occasion for their stumbling. This is a vital perspective for us to have. If there is anything in our lives that might cause a brother or sister to be tripped up in their walk with Jesus, we must be willing to lay that down for their sake in Christian love. Love for others and the peace of the church is much more important than any freedom we might otherwise legitimately enjoy.
